The overarching goal of the Minister of National Defence is to ensure that the Canadian Armed Forces are equipped and prepared, if called upon, to protect Canadian sovereignty, defend North America, provide disaster relief, conduct search and rescue, support United Nations peace operations, and contribute to the security of our allies and to allied and coalition operations abroad.

Military Judges Compensation Committee

The Military Judges Compensation Committee has a mandate to inquire into the adequacy of the salaries and benefits of military judges. In examining the remuneration, the committee takes into account the prevailing economic conditions in Canada, including the cost of living and the overall economic and current financial position of the federal government; the role of financial security of military judges in ensuring judicial independence; the need to attract outstanding officers as military judges; and any other objective criteria that the Committee considers relevant.

Per diem: $600 - $700

Education and Experience

• Hold an undergraduate degree in law from a recognized Canadian university or an acceptable combination of education, job related training and/or experience;
• Experience as a committee member or decision-maker in a quasi-judicial organization; and/or
• Experience in making findings and recommendations in a non-adjudicative organization; and
• Experience in the interpretation and application of legislation, regulations, policies or directives.

If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the role, mandate, remuneration and responsibilities of a military judge;
• Knowledge of the prevailing economic conditions in Canada, including the cost of living and the overall economic and current financial position of the federal government;
• Knowledge of the role of financial security of judges in ensuring judicial independence;
• Knowledge of the principles of procedural fairness;
• Knowledge of the Canadian Armed Forces organization and structure;
• Ability to interpret relevant statutes, regulations, and policies and to analyse complex situations in order to make equitable and timely findings and recommendations;
• Ability to exercise independent and sound judgement while working alone or as part of a panel or team;
• Strategic thinking (analysis, ideas); and
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Language Requirements

Proficiency in both official languages would be preferred.
